In 2001 my daughter, Abigail (then
9 years old) was diagnosed with CVS. The CVSA was a lifesaver for
us during that crazy, confusing time in our lives. During our
pursuit to find answers for Abby, we realized that while there was
not much out there in the form of resources, and there was even less
out there for kids; written in language that they could understand.
So, right then and there, I decided to create one.
Now a 6 ½ years later, I have been
able to realize my dream. What I See
When I Close My Eyes: A Story of Dreams, Wishes, and Hopes
is a children’s book that is written to spark discussion about
feelings the kiddo is experiencing while also empowering them to
take back some control in their lives. It is centered around a
little girl that has “tummy issues” (to those with CVS - there will
be no question as to what she has!), but I purposely kept it
somewhat general so that it can appeal to those without CVS as well.
It is a
book that gives back. A portion of the profits of this book
will be given to the CVSA
(which is why I made it appeal to others without CVS). There
is an entire page dedicated to information regarding CVS. In
addition, I have created a website to market the book that has a
resource page where folks can learn about CVS.

I have begun sending the book to
Abby’s doctors-including pediatricians, GI docs, etc. and Child Life
departments at the local hospitals among others. Who knows -
somebody sitting in the waiting room at one of the doctors offices
might find the answer to their “mystery illness”. At just $10, it
makes a nice gift for the holidays!
